Corvallis School Board Member: Luhui Whitebear Elected for Seat #4

Corvallis recently had an election for four open school board positions. The candidates all varied on stances about anti-racism, schools’ inclusivity policies, and many different ideas and opinions on other current and future policies. Photo from a feature story from liberalarts.oregonstate.edu Luhui Whitebear, an advocate, hiker, poet, and mom ran for and now is in the fourth spot on the Corvallis School Board. Many people might recognize Whitebear from her work as the Center Director of the Kaku-Ixt Mana Ina Haws at Oregon State University, or from her activism work for the Indigenous community. She is also an enrolled member of the Coastal Band of the Chumash Nation in California, which is where she grew up. She also teaches classes at OSU including culture, society and ethnic studies, women’s gender and sexuality studies, and queer studies. BYO Coffee and Tea: LBCC's 13th Annual Unity Day Celebration with Guest Speaker Dr. Keith Dempsey

Screen cap from event held over Zoom Feb 25. LBCC held the 13th annual Unity Day Celebration over Zoom on Feb 25. The Unity Celebration is intended to celebrate the diversity, equity, and inclusion of our college and recognize members of the community for exemplifying those standards. Jason Dorsette, Executive Director of the office of Institutional Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, joined this year to introduce the event. The awards presented are the Analee Fuentes Unity Award, the Gary Westford-Robin Havenick Community Connections Award, and the winners of the annual Black History Month Essay Contest. Participants also heard from LBCC’s award-winning choir performing “The New Colossus” by Emma Lazarus, and this year’s Poet Laureate Sophia Griffith reading her poem “Live Your Life”. Dr. Keith Dempsey was this year’s keynote speaker. He is a mental health professional, specializing in advocating for Black mental health. EDI Hosts Support Animals Informational Zoom Event

Angie Geno, member of SLC Legislative Affairs, writing on a whiteboard advertising the Safe Haven destress event and its midterm benefits. LBCC’s office of Institutional Equity, Diversity & Inclusion held an informational Zoom event on Jan. 26 to spread awareness and facts about support animals. They described the three main types of support animals. The first are therapy animals. They are intended to provide emotional support to people who are in a variety of situations, including hospitalized people, people who are in group homes because of age or if they have disabilities, people who are in school, and people who are in other high-stress situations. The second, and more widely known, are service animals. The Americans with Disabilities Act only recognizes dogs and miniature horses as service animals because they have less illnesses that humans are susceptible to.
