Corvallis recently had an election for four open school board positions. The candidates all varied on stances about anti-racism, schools’ inclusivity policies, and many different ideas and opinions on other current and future policies. Photo from a feature story from liberalarts.oregonstate.edu Luhui Whitebear, an advocate, hiker, poet, and mom ran for and now is in the fourth spot on the Corvallis School Board. Many people might recognize Whitebear from her work as the Center Director of the Kaku-Ixt Mana Ina Haws at Oregon State University, or from her activism work for the Indigenous community. She is also an enrolled member of the Coastal Band of the Chumash Nation in California, which is where she grew up. She also teaches classes at OSU including culture, society and ethnic studies, women’s gender and sexuality studies, and queer studies. The Unity Celebration is intended to celebrate the diversity, equity, and inclusion of our college and recognize members of the community for exemplifying those standards. Jason Dorsette, Executive Director of the office of Institutional Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, joined this year to introduce the event. The awards presented are the Analee Fuentes Unity Award, the Gary Westford-Robin Havenick Community Connections Award, and the winners of the annual Black History Month Essay Contest. Participants also heard from LBCC’s award-winning choir performing “The New Colossus” by Emma Lazarus, and this year’s Poet Laureate Sophia Griffith reading her poem “Live Your Life”. LB's Updated COVID-19 Regulations

Colleges and universities have made many adjustments to the state’s already established masking, distancing, and quarantine rules, including having students attend Zoom school instead. LBCC was no different. LB started winter term off with more in-person classes offered, 26%, exactly, according to LB’s education plan, which is on their main website. The Commuter contacted Jennifer Boehmer, Executive Director of Institutional Advancement, and she gave a full account of how the school plans to respond and keep guidelines updated and its students and staff safe. LB is keeping in close contact with the Oregon Health Authority (OHA), Linn-County Health Department, and the other colleges and universities in Oregon for updates on cases and what they recommend doing, she said. “We just learned of a new federal distribution of testing kits in our area and are working quickly to determine how LBCC can assist in distributing these kits to our community” through the Linn County Health Department, ...
