Corvallis recently had an election for four open school board positions. The candidates all varied on stances about anti-racism, schools’ inclusivity policies, and many different ideas and opinions on other current and future policies. Photo from a feature story from liberalarts.oregonstate.edu Luhui Whitebear, an advocate, hiker, poet, and mom ran for and now is in the fourth spot on the Corvallis School Board. Many people might recognize Whitebear from her work as the Center Director of the Kaku-Ixt Mana Ina Haws at Oregon State University, or from her activism work for the Indigenous community. She is also an enrolled member of the Coastal Band of the Chumash Nation in California, which is where she grew up. She also teaches classes at OSU including culture, society and ethnic studies, women’s gender and sexuality studies, and queer studies. Spring Term COVID-19 Updates

Image from freepik.com It’s now week two of spring term. Since winter term ended the COVID-19 mandates have changed a lot within the state as well as LBCC. An Aviso System update email was sent out last Monday on the first day of this term. Here’s what it said: Welcome back from Spring Break! As we transition into spring term, LBCC is following state guidance and making mask-wearing optional. Please be supportive of those who continue masking. Here are a few other reminders regarding COVID safety: If you have tested for COVID-19; AND, have been given positive results, please fill out the COVID-19 form , as we need to continue to monitor our campus for outbreaks. If you test positive, regardless of your vaccine status, please isolate yourself for five (5) days and wear a well-fitting mask for five (5) additional days. BYO Coffee and Tea: LBCC's 13th Annual Unity Day Celebration with Guest Speaker Dr. Keith Dempsey

The Unity Celebration is intended to celebrate the diversity, equity, and inclusion of our college and recognize members of the community for exemplifying those standards. Jason Dorsette, Executive Director of the office of Institutional Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, joined this year to introduce the event. The awards presented are the Analee Fuentes Unity Award, the Gary Westford-Robin Havenick Community Connections Award, and the winners of the annual Black History Month Essay Contest. Participants also heard from LBCC’s award-winning choir performing “The New Colossus” by Emma Lazarus, and this year’s Poet Laureate Sophia Griffith reading her poem “Live Your Life”.
